The common and most realistic way to put out a fire, is water.  But, be ware sometimes, water is not recommended, it will only spread the fire.

There are different types of fire extinguishers, due to different class types of combustible material.  The different types of fire extinguishers are A, B, C, D, and K.  

• TYPE  A                                                                                                              ordinary combustible materials, such as wood, cloth, paper, rubber, and many plastics    
• TYPE  B                                                                                                            flammable liquids, combustible liquids, petroleum greases, tars, oils, oil-based paints, solvents, lacquers, alcohols, and flammable gases    
• TYPE  C                                                                                                              fires that involve energized electrical equipment.
• TYPE  D                                                                                                            combustible metals, such as magnesium, titanium, zirconium, sodium, lithium, and potassium.
• TYPE  K                                                                                                      cooking appliances that involve combustible cooking media (vegetable or animal oils and fats).

When dealing with a lithium battery fire, the method of extinguishing it depends on the battery’s size and type.

Class D fire extinguishers are suitable for lithium-metal battery fires, while lithium-ion battery fires, classified as Class B fires involving flammable liquids, can be extinguished using a standard dry chemical or ABC extinguisher.   Specifically designed lithium battery fire extinguishers work by neutralizing the liquid electrolytes within the battery that form conductive paths.

Small lithium batteries have minimal lithium content, making them safe to be extinguished with water.   In the case of large lithium-ion battery fires, it is recommended to use a foam extinguisher that contains CO2, powdered graphite, ABC dry chemical, or sodium carbonate.  

If a fire cannot be put out, allow the battery to burn out in a controlled manner. To stop the fire from spreading, douse the surrounding area with water.  

Choosing the right fire extinguisher for your home and finding the ideal storage location can be challenging. When selecting a home fire extinguisher, opt for an all-purpose or multi-rated extinguisher marked as “ABC.” This indicates that the fire extinguisher is suitable for Class A, B, and C fires.  

When considering the quantity of home fire extinguishers needed, aim to have at least one on each floor for quick access during emergencies. Store fire extinguishers in the kitchen and garage as well. It is crucial to recognize when a fire is beyond control. While fire extinguishers are essential components of a fire safety plan, the top priority is to evacuate safely.

In automobiles, the prevalent materials belong to the first three classes. Consequently, most car fire extinguishers are classified as either ABC or BC, suitable for versatile applications.

A 2.5 lb fire extinguisher is suitable for cars, convenient for small fires. Larger extinguishers are more effective for bigger fires; regulations dictate specific sizes for RVs and commercial trucks.

You should always keep a fire extinguisher in a very accessible, safe place.   A type “A B C” 5 – 10 pound fire extinguisher is the most common type people have stored. 

If a fire cannot be put out, in a controlled manner, allow the fire to burn out.   To stop the fire from spreading, douse the surrounding area with water. Recognizing when a fire becomes overwhelming, hazardous, or unmanageable is crucial.  There are occasions when it’s necessary to use your better judgment, and let fire men handle the situation.
